Design: The Art of Influencing Emotions

Design is a journey into the unknown, a quest to discover what works among the numerous ideas crisscrossing your mind. Designing for emotions is another dimension that requires the designer to not only look within but also see things through the eyes of the user. Whether it’s a physical space or a business card, the designer needs to tailor the design to bring out the right emotions in the users.

In the words of the late Steve Jobs, “Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” The most important consideration in the design process is function. If the product is not working as the user needs it to, what is the point, right?

A designer must consider how something works, how it looks, and how it makes the users feel. Design is understanding how something will make someone feel and making it work.

Connecting with the Design

People respond emotionally to the designs with which they interact. The shape of a house, the ambience in a room, the layout and flow of a website, and the choice of colour palette all stir up feelings of excitement, calmness, trust, or even frustration. A good design influences these emotional responses to create experiences that resonate with people. 

When done effectively, design doesn’t just meet the needs of users; it forges a connection between the product or space and the individual. A well-crafted design inspires a specific emotional reaction, which can influence decisions, behaviours, and even long-term brand loyalty.

Elements that Influence Emotions

There are several design elements that play a crucial role in influencing emotions:

  • Colour: Colour psychology is one of the most powerful tools in design. Different colours evoke different feelings—blue often conveys trust and calmness, while red can create excitement or urgency. Understanding this allows us to use colour strategically to guide emotional reactions.
  • Typography: The style of the font can drastically affect the mood of a design. Serif fonts can create a sense of tradition and authority, while sans-serif fonts feel more modern and approachable.
  • Space and Layout: The arrangement of elements within a design can create a sense of calm or chaos. Minimalist designs often feel serene and uncluttered, while complex layouts can lead to feelings of excitement or energy.
  • Textures and Materials: In physical spaces or product designs, textures and materials play a major role in how users feel. Warm, natural materials can evoke comfort and cosiness, while sleek, polished surfaces give a more modern and professional feel.
  • Patterns: The use of patterns in textiles, tiles, wall coverings, branding, and digital interfaces can infuse a sense of rootedness and storytelling.
  • Lighting: Lighting plays a pivotal role in influencing the emotions and atmosphere of a space or design. It shapes not only how we perceive objects and environments but also how we feel in them. Lighting influences emotions through brightness and intensity, colour temperature of the light (i.e., warm or cool lighting), shadows and contrast, mix of natural and artificial light, direction and placement of the light, and dynamic lighting (i.e., changing or adjustable light).

To truly influence emotions through design, empathy is essential. It’s about stepping into the user’s shoes, understanding their needs, challenges, and desires, and crafting a design that speaks directly to them. At DSD, our process starts with asking key questions:

  • How do we want the user to feel when interacting with this design?
  • What emotions will enhance their experience, making it more memorable?
