Kumpa House

Project Information:
Background

This single-storey masonry stone building is a 3-bedroom house located in Kumpa, a semi-urban neighbourhood in Kajiado County, Kenya. The site is within a gated residential community off Nairobi-Namanga Road, featuring private dwelling homes. The house is designed to accommodate a mid-size family on a 150 by 68 feet lot.

Challenge

The design challenge of the project was to create a plan for a house of about 150 square meters space with the following spaces: living room, dining room, kitchen, pantry, laundry, guest washroom, common bathroom, two bedrooms, an en suite master bedroom, and a carport for 2 vehicles. The brief also requested a detached one-bedroom guest house, wastewater treatment on-site and garden space for outdoor living.

Solution

The building has a total living space of 165 square metres. It has incorporated all the desired spaces, allowing for separate public and private spaces. The front and back porches add more public space. The design of the house has a ground coverage of less than 25 per cent; allowing for plenty of greenery around the house. The house is slightly set back from the street to allow for privacy and greenery along the main access roads. The front facade of the house looks away from the street, to maximise views and helps in maintaining privacy for the users. The carport is located on the northern side of the house directly in front of the main gate for easier vehicular navigation.

Result

The outcome of the project is an attractive traditional style 3-bedroom house with spacious rooms. The most distinctive feature of the house is the two-tone external wall finishes that contrast neatly against each other. The design allows for dual use of both the indoor and outdoor spaces interchangeably. The house has an outstretched design that enables each space to be naturally lit and to have great views at the same time. The spacious open living and dining rooms enable the users to have plenty of space for family and entertaining. The house design is ideal for an urban mid-size family.
