Background
This is a project for the architectural design of a modern 4-bedroom house located in Utawala, an urban neighborhood in Nairobi County, Kenya. The house is a two-story masonry stone building designed to accommodate a mid-size family and is situated on a 43 by 80 feet lot within a residential area that features private dwelling homes, churches, and schools.
Challenge
The challenge was to design a house that could fit within a space limitation of 312 square meters while accommodating all the desired spaces, including a front porch, lobby, living room, dining room, kitchen, laundry/utility area, pantry, guest toilet, three bedrooms en suite, master bedroom en suite, and outdoor parking for 2 vehicles.
Solution
The building has a total living space of 222 square metres. It has incorporated all the desired spaces, allowing for well-defined common and individual spaces. The design of the house has a ground coverage of less than 40 per cent; allowing for plenty of greenery around the house. The house is centrally set to allow for natural lighting. It features a spacious rooftop terrace perfect for family hangouts and entertaining.
Result
A stylish modern 4 bedroom house with large windows that complement the design. The house’s most distinctive features are the large framed windows that greatly define the front facade. The design has large overhangs to provide sun shading. It has an overall stylish and functional design that makes it perfectly suited for its site. The house design is modern and uses the latest technology to provide a comfortable home.
