Background
This 4 Bedroom House is located in Ruiru in a semi-urban neighbourhood in Kiambu County, Kenya. The house is a two-and-a-half-storey masonry stone building designed to accommodate a mid-size family. The site is a 41 by 55 feet plot situated within a residential area that features private dwelling homes, churches and schools.
Challenge
With a space limitation of 213 square metres, the design had to accommodate the following spaces: front porch, living room, dining room, kitchen, pantry, laundry, back porch, storage room, guest toilet, en suite guest bedroom, two bedrooms ensuite, an ensuite master bedroom with a WIC, study, rooftop terrace, and a carport.
Solution
The building has a total living space of 230 square metres. It has incorporated all the desired spaces, allowing for well-defined family and individual spaces. The design of the house has a ground coverage of less than 50 per cent; allowing for plenty of greenery around the house. The house is centrally set to allow for natural lighting. It features a semi-open floor plan creating a flow between living, dining and kitchen perfect for family interactions.
Result
A stylish modern 4 bedroom house with a clean minimalist facade. The house’s most distinctive features are the framed front and side windows that greatly define the front facade. The design allows for plenty of natural light into the interior and creates a nice connection between the indoor and outdoor space. It has an overall compact design that makes it perfectly suited for its tight site. The house design is elegant through its simplicity and practicality.
