Background
This 6 Bedroom House is located in Utawala, a suburban neighbourhood in Nairobi City, Kenya. The house is a two-storey masonry stone building designed to accommodate a large family. The site is an acre plot situated alongside two major roads.
Challenge
The site is located along a flight path and has a height restriction of about three storeys. The design had to accommodate the following spaces: living room, dining room, study, kitchen, laundry, guest toilet, family room, four en suite bedrooms, two master bedrooms suites, and a guest wing.
Solution
The building has a total living space of 540 square metres. It has incorporated all the desired spaces, allowing for both public and private spaces to be navigated smoothly. The design of the house allows for both indoor and outdoor living, thanks to the large terrace space at the back and numerous balconies. The house is very spacious and has an open-plan setup for the main spaces. The guest wing has 2 bedrooms and a common bathroom.
Result
A transitional style 6 bedroom house with rustic yet modern appeal. The most distinctive features of the house are the front facade and rear pergola-covered terrace. The design features arched windows and doorways. It has a natural stone finish with neutral paint colours. Another key feature of the house is the natural stone fireplace and chimney. The living room is a double-volume space with large openings with views to the back garden. The house has 2 master bedroom suites, one with its separate access on the ground floor, and the other on the upper floor. The design allows for a happy co-existence for all its users with plenty of room to play, work and hang out.
