Background
This 5 Bedroom House is located in Juja Town in a semi-urban neighbourhood in Kiambu County, Kenya. The house is a three-storey masonry stone building designed to accommodate a mid-size family. The site is a 1/8 acre (50 by 100 feet) plot situated within a gated residential community that features private dwelling homes.
Challenge
With a height restriction of a maximum of three storeys, the design had to accommodate the following spaces: living room, dining room, kitchen, laundry area, guest toilet, four en suite bedrooms, an en suite master bedroom with a WIC, study, gym, rooftop terrace, and a garage. The brief also required a backhouse to be featured that had sleeping quarters.
Solution
The building has a total living space of about 430 square metres. It has incorporated all the desired spaces, allowing for both public and private spaces to be navigated smoothly. The design of the house has a ground coverage of less than 50 per cent; allowing for plenty of greenery around the house. The house is deeply set back from the street to allow for recreational and parking spaces. The detached backhouse design allows for independent use of the supporting building.
Result
A modern style 5 bedroom house with corner windows and a natural stone finish. The most distinctive features of the house are the tall rectangular chimney and stairwell that rise from the ground to the rooftop. The design features a lot of cantilevered elements such as the master balcony roof and the rooftop terrace. It has an overall compact design that enables each space to take full advantage of natural light and available views. The house design enables the comfortable use of the spaces by a mid-size family. With separate zones for family and entertaining, the house design is ideal for fast-paced urban life.
