Background
This 6 Bedroom House is located in Syokimau Estate, Mavoko Sub-County, Machakos, Kenya. The house is a three-storey masonry stone building designed to accommodate a large family. The site is a 1/8 acre (50 by 100 feet) plot situated within a residential community in the Suburbs of Nairobi, next to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Challenge
With a height restriction of a maximum of three storeys, the design had to accommodate the following spaces: living room, dining room, kitchen, laundry, guest toilet, five en suite bedrooms, an en suite master bedroom, family room, rooftop terrace, and carports. The brief also required a backhouse to be featured that had sleeping & living quarters.
Solution
The building has a total living space of 410 square metres. It has incorporated all the desired spaces, allowing for both public and private spaces to be distinct. The design of the house has a ground coverage of less than 50 per cent; allowing for plenty of greenery around the house. The house is deeply set back from the street on two sides to allow for recreational and parking spaces. The detached backhouse design allows for independent use of the supporting building.
Result
A modern architecture style 6 bedroom house with contrasting finishes. The most distinctive features of the house are the tall rectangular archways that rise from the ground to the rooftop. The design features a lot of balcony & terrace space. It has an open floor plan for the main public spaces that enable people to interact with ease. The house design features large glazed doors and windows to allow for natural light and views. This design creates a smooth indoor and outdoor living experience, perfect for a modern family lifestyle.
