Background
This 3 Bedroom House is located in Ruai in a semi-urban neighbourhood in Nairobi County, Kenya. The house is a single-storey masonry stone building designed to accommodate a mid-size family. The site is a 50 by 70 feet lot situated within a residential community off Kangundo Road that features private dwelling homes.
Challenge
With a space restriction of 300 square metres, the design had to accommodate the following spaces: living room, dining room, kitchen, pantry, laundry, separate shower & toilet, two bedrooms, an en suite master bedroom and a carport. The brief also required wastewater treatment on-site and garden space for outdoor living.
Solution
The building has a total living space of 115 square metres. It has incorporated all the desired spaces, allowing for separate public and private spaces. The kitchen and washroom area act as a semi-public space. The design of the house has a ground coverage of less than 50 per cent; allowing for plenty of greenery around the house. The house is deeply set back from the street to allow for garden spaces along the main access roads. This also helps in maintaining privacy for the users. The carport is located on the eastern side of the house directly in front of the main gate for easier vehicular navigation.
Result
An attractive traditional style 3 bedroom house with ample spaces. The most distinctive features of the house are the two-tone external wall finishes that contrast neatly against each other. The design allows for dual use of the dining space, for both eating and relaxing. The house has an outstretched design that enables each space to be naturally lit and to have great views at the same time. The spacious living room enables the users to have plenty is room for family and entertaining. The house design is ideal for an urban mid-size family.
